With a livestock density among the highest in the world and a sensitive aquatic environment it has been necessary for the Danish government to support and enhance the development of innovative and environmentally friendly technologies for handling livestock manure. This has resulted in an awareness of the many advantages of utilising the manure for energy purposes which are described in this publication.
The growing awareness of resource depletion and climate challenges has made it increasingly clear that there are huge potentials in reducing greenhouse emissions from the livestock manure by exploiting its energy content. Already today, around one fifth of Danish pig and dairy farmers are involved in manure based biogas production; most of them via farmer cooperative owned industrial sized biogas plants.
This publication aims to provide a general overview of Danish state-of-the-art technologies and skills in the supply chain from livestock manure to energy and explain some major contextual policies, legislation and frawework conditions. It also holds a quick reference guide to the related technology suppliers and other companies and institutions with supply chain expertise. The pamphlet is intented for anybody with an interest in innovative ways to handle current challenges to reduce the environmental and climatic impacts of livestock production while simultaneously increasing production of renewable energy and the demand for meat and dairy products from a growing world population.
The publication is available in English, Chinese and Russian.
